Her popularity was because she had starred in Whedon's next TV hit, Firefly. In Summer Glau's role, River Tam was a complicated persona that Glau was able to handle with ease. The character Tam was forced to take part in government experiments in which she was trained to be an assassin. Tam's capacity to control her emotions is taken from her. The show Firefly Glau was capable of displaying not only her acting abilities but her ability to fight. Being learning to be an assassin enabled Glau to fully use her athletic ability. Summer Glau was classically-trained as ballerina. A broken toe was the end of her career as an actress. Firefly was only on for one season, but it gained a loyal following. Whedon was so in love with the show that he decided to return to the show just a couple of years afterwards. Summer Glau was still getting high-quality work throughout the interim.
